Carbon Monoxide Detectors Mandated
December
5, 2006
A new Illinois law mandates carbon monoxide
detectors in residences as of Jan. 1, 2007.
Public Act 94-741 requires that every dwelling unit in
Illinois be equipped with at least one approved carbon
monoxide alarm in operating condition within 15 feet of
every room used for sleeping purposes.
A dwelling unit would include a single family residence as
well as each living unit of a multiple-family residence and
each living unit in a mixed-use building. The legislation
specifies that it is the responsibility of the owner of a
structure to supply and install all required alarms.
Willful failure to install or maintain any carbon monoxide
alarm required by this Act is a Class B misdemeanor. The new
law does exempt certain residential units from the
requirement. |
